NAOMI Back in Service

Tuesday March 17, 2026

Since Summer will be here soon, I really wanted to get the NAOMI working again.

Like I said in the last post, it went from ERROR 31 (Game not acceptable by main board) to just not booting at all. After some troubleshooting with a friend, we got it to boot again by removing the plastic case from the netDIMM, just like Ken suggested. Still, every attempt at loading a game resulted in ERROR 31. This Arcade Projects post was enough to convince us that I needed new RAM. Thankfully NAOMI compatible, DDR2 RAM has been spared from the massive spike in RAM price.

Actually, I don’t know if that’s true. Two sticks of 512MB DDR2 RAM was ~$30 on eBay. I have no idea what DDR2 RAM went for before the bullshit, but $30 to potentially fix this NAOMI is worth a shot.

It arrived today. I apologize for the lack of pictures. I was more concerned with reassembling the netDIMM correctly, since I left my dumb ass a nice pile of screws and loose PCBs to decipher.

This picture was taken after I installed the new RAM, but I will admit that the real reason I took the picture was for use in the upcoming issue of JAMMS. Stay tuned.

I put in back in the Blast. It is kind of a pain in the ass getting it in there, mostly due to the fucking Sun PSU getting in the way all the time. Anyway, I got ERROR 22 (Communication error occurred between main board and option board.) I figured it might be acting up since it’s back in the plastic case, so I took it out, just like when I was troubleshooting with my friend.

There was a different error. ERROR 32 (DIMM memory is not enough.) After double-checking that I bought the right sized RAM on eBay, I desperately put the old RAM back in and started it up.

It worked. What? I have no idea what made this attempt different from the last attempt.

Now that it works, I’m kind of afraid to touch it. The netDIMM is bare, which may not be great in the long run, but I kind of don’t care at this point. I can’t wait to play Virtua Athlete and Capcom vs. SNK 2.
