Participants play in the normal arcade style, meaning the winner stays on the machine. The winner gains a point for each win, and the loser subtracts a point for each loss. Reaching +3 advances you to the next rank, while -3 knocks you down a rank. Being promoted or demoted ends your ranked battle session. The remaining players continue to play for a set period of time. We tend to play for an hour-ish each session. Current points are kept track of on paper. As everyone's ranks spread out, sessions will be held for specific ranges of ranks (eg. 9th kyu to 8th kyu) so that a high ranking player can't farm the scrubs for points. Rank is tied to character, not player. A highly ranked player can start from the bottom with a new character.
